When to Build Custom Software vs. Buy Off-the-Shelf

We build custom software for a living, and even we don't recommend it by default. Here's the framework we actually use.
Buy off-the-shelf when...
- Your workflow is genuinely standard — invoicing, CRM, project management
- A mature product already solves 80%+ of your need
- Speed to adoption matters more than perfect fit
Build custom when...
- Your workflow is the thing that makes your business competitive — not incidental to it
- You're stitching together three or more tools with fragile manual workarounds
- Licensing costs for "enough seats to cover everyone" exceed the cost of owning the system outright
The middle path most businesses miss
You don't have to choose one extreme. A lot of our custom software work is actually a thin, purpose-built layer that integrates existing off-the-shelf tools — giving you a workflow that fits exactly, without rebuilding what already works.
